Reimagining a Mountain Home: A BDG Remodel Story

At Brown Design Group, design begins long before furniture selections or material palettes. It starts with the land, the architecture, and the way a family wants to live in their home. Our recent remodel in the mountains is a perfect example of how thoughtful transformation can honor a home’s original character while elevating its function, flow, and sense of place.

This project invited us to slow down, listen to the house, and reveal its best qualities. Below, we’re sharing a look into the design concepts, challenges, and philosophies that shaped the final result.

A Round Window That Anchored the Entire Home

Every home has a detail that quietly guides the design. Here, it was the round window , an architectural feature many homeowners remove because they believe it dates the space. For us, it became the anchor. We designed outward from that circle, using it to orient sightlines, establish balance, and frame natural light.

Materials We Obsess Over

In every remodel, materials set the tone.

Here, wide-plank white oak flooring established the calm, cohesive base the home needed. A live-edge slab bar added organic drama and became a gathering point.
We believe in materials that speak quietly but confidently, ones you feel with your hands and your feet.

Where Craft Meets Fire: Copper, Iron, and Heart

Mountain homes call for materials with soul.

The custom copper and iron elements, especially the handcrafted fireplace flue and stair details, brought artistry and permanence. These moments honor the tradespeople who helped realize the vision and reflect the raw beauty of the landscape around us.

Preserving Charm: What Makes a Remodel Feel New Without Losing Soul

A thoughtful remodel doesn’t erase what came before, it selectively reveals and refines it.

We kept elements that grounded the home and supported its story, while removing what interrupted flow or function. The result is a home that feels both renewed and centered, modern yet warm, elevated but never sterile.

Light That Transforms: The Sun Room Experience

One of the most impactful changes in the home came from opening the sun deck and inviting more natural light into the interior. Removing barriers allowed the room to breathe, blending the line between indoors and outdoors. The result is a space that lives larger, feels calmer, and shifts beautifully with the mountain sun.

A Collaborative Dialogue: How We Saw the Space

When we first walked this home, its 80s-contemporary furnishings hid a tremendous amount of potential. Simplifying the ceiling, rethinking the lighting, and leaning into mountain-modern materials allowed the home to transform into something timeless. Our design process is always a conversation, between designers, clients, architecture, and nature. This project beautifully reflected that dialogue.

Before & After: A Visual Journey

Why Remodels Matter And Why BDG Loves Them

Remodels challenge us in ways new builds can’t. Working within existing walls requires precision, creativity, and trust, and we thrive in that environment.

We don’t apply quick fixes; we rethink the entire project. Remodels are puzzles, and solving them is at the heart of our craft.

We look at flow, light, materials, and purpose long before demolition ever begins.
And above all, we partner deeply with our clients and our trades to ensure every project is executed with care.

Our Philosophy

Timeless, not trendy.
Crafted, not rushed.
Inspired by nature, shaped by craftsmanship, and personalized for the families who gather within these walls.

Throughout the renovation, they kept us up to date with the progress. The project took over a year to be completed, but it definitely was worth the wait! It was beyond our expectations and vision. They completely transformed our home. All I can say is that it is absolutely a beautiful home!

Final Reflections

What made this remodel so unforgettable wasn’t just the architecture or materials, it was the way every detail came together to create a home full of light, warmth, and possibility. These are the projects that remind us why we do what we do: design that brings joy, connection, and comfort to the people who live there.
